Students from across University of Queensland (UQ) compete annually in the national Formula SAE competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The competition provides opportunities for some of UQ's young and emerging professionals to design, build and market a small open-wheel race car over the period of one year, to a formula designed to challenge the students ingenuity.

Driving facilities at Mt Cotton Training Centre were utilised by students and academics to give them the chance to gain real world experience in a safe and controlled environment by trialling and testing their vehicle for engineering design, handling capability and so on.

In 2004 UQ Racing took first place in the Acceleration event in both the English and Australasian competitions as third in endurance and fourth place overall at the Australian Championships in Melbourne. 2005 saw the team improve from the previous year by winning Acceleration, coming second in Endurance and third in Autocross with an overall placing of second.
